  • In 1979, BTE is founded and performs its first-ever production: For Colored Girls by Ntozake Shange.

  • In 1988, BTE is gaining traction as a space for the cultural representation of the black experience.

  • In 1990, BTE is continuously producing show after show like The Colored Museum and The Life and Times of Malcolm X.

 

2006


 
  • In 2006, BTE moves into the 21st century and explores musical theater that center black voices.

 

2014


  • In 2014, BTE partners with the Theater & Performance Studies Program to produce In the Red and Brown Water.

 

2019


 
  • In 2019, BTE puts on their own modern revival of The Colored Museum.

 

2021


  • In 2021, BTE partners with Mask and Bauble for their co-production of Beyond the Lights written and directed by Samuel Oni (COL ‘22).
